2018 has been the starting year for Futures Photography and it exceeded beyond expectations. 2019 will be the year of validation for the platform presence in the photographic scene, enforcing our connections with more institutions in Europe and preparing the terrain to meet the rest of the world in order to support the emerging artists' careers in the best way.
In addition to the 10 existing partners, two more European institutions will join the platform as new members: Unseen Foundation (NL) and the Calvert Journal (UK). Unseen Foundation will select the best Dutch talents in The Netherlands and the Calvert Journal will focus on eastern Europe and the Balkans.
Following the calendar, from spring to autumn the Futures partners’ activity will be at full capacity: the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center will organize the Budapest Portfolio Reviews on April 12th and 13th and it will choose the talents for 2019 that will be announced with a public screening during the night of the 13th.
On April 17th the Hamburg Triennale will host the "Talent Campus”, a two days workshop open to 15 artists previously selected via an open call. Out of those, five talents will be nominated as part of Futures.
On April 25th the International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères will open the exhibition of the selected 2019 talents. In the program, also artists visits and panel discussions between the shortlisted artists and the festival curator Raphaelle Stopin.
May 2nd is the initial day of PhotoIreland Festival which will exhibit the results of the residency done by artists Luis Alberto Rodriguez and it will introduce the 2019 talents’ list. The exhibitions will stay open until the end of August.
From May 23rd to 26th, Camera-Italian Center for Photography in Turin (IT) will host the first of the two workshops offered to their nominated 2019 talents. The second part will be in November. Moreover, in July Camera will offer 5 scholarships for the masterclasses in Visual Storytelling they will organize together in collaboration with ICP.
From May 17th to 19th it will be the period of the “Days of Cluj” and Photo Romania will host two exhibitions dedicated to the 2019 talents and throughout the summer it will host more exhibitions from the other partners of Futures.
June 13th will be the turn of Fotofestiwal Łódź in Poland, hosting during the opening weekend a night screening of the 2019 talents and during daytime the “Photo-Match: A Different Kind of Portfolio Reviews”. Until June 30th, it will be possible to visit the Futures exhibitions in the main locations of Łódź, one dedicated to the 2018 artists in residence Simone Sapienza and Nolwenn Brod and the presentation “Futures Narratives”, a selection of artists part of the platform.
Calvert Journal will announce the list of the selected talents on June 7th.
FOMU will exhibit the best 2019 emerging artists in Belgium on June 27th in Antwerp.
From July 3rd to 7th it will be the opening days of PhotoEspaña in Madrid where the 2019 talents will be introduced with an open discussion panel and talk together with a dedicated exhibition.
September will see the participation of Futures as a platform to the event of Unseen Amsterdam. This will be a moment for the talents and the members to meet and have the opportunity to discuss, exchange their networks and get together.
On October 24th-27th, the British Journal of Photography will host a workshop dedicated to the 2019 talents to meet the editorial team and discuss with them their project.
Other events will be organized during 2019 and more details about each event will be updated and shared on Futures Photography channels.
Especially the information about the talent calls promoted by each of the partners will be announced via the Futures website and social media.
