Photobooks have always been a convenient way for artists to show their work and to reach a broader audience. In times of quarantine, when galleries and museums are closed, these publications are a good way to keep up with what's new in contemporary photography and support artistic practices. We selected some of these works, recently published by the Futures talents of 2019:
Lukas Heibges: 'Herr M. – Justice Case of a Forger'
Lukas Heibges focuses on current controversies in the way people relate to the judicial system and questions our view of morality and justice. Published by Spector Books, the book centres on the story of a forger, shedding light both on his personality and on the court proceeding against him. The publication takes the form of a case file and traces the story of Herr M. on the basis of observation reports, judicial files, photographs, and interviews.
Charlotte Schmitz: 'La Puente'
Published by FotoEvidence in 2019, 'La Puente' follows Charlotte's project about the biggest brothel in Southern Ecuador, where over 150 women work. The photos were created in collaboration with these women, who chose their own poses and many painted their polaroids with nail polish to cover their faces.
Irene Fenara: 'Who Needs Eyes When You Have Sapphire Crystal Lenses?'
Self-published in 2018, 'Who Needs Eyes When You Have Sapphire Crystal Lenses?' is a collection of images from surveillance cameras and saved from the continuous stream that deletes them every 24 hours. In the book, Irene Fenara presents a disturbing and dystopian imaginary of a world apparently without human beings, focused on the development of technology in relation to the growth of its potentiality through the web.
Katarzyna Wasowska: 'Sea of Inlanders'
Published by the collective Ostrov in 2019, the newspaper Sea of Inlanders is a tool for the people from inland to have a substitute of the feeling we get while contemplating the sea. While looking at the sea we get a sense of respect to nature, very needed to achieve harmony in our inner-self, not having this opportunity among people living inland probably causes a lot of damage for them and for the environment. This newspaper may help. Enjoy lack of news, relax and look at the horizon.
Maroussia Prignot & Valerio Alvarez: 'Here, Waiting'
In 2019, the duo published the photobook about their collaborative project with asylum seekers. In 2015, when a refugee camp settled in the Maximilian Park in the center of Brussels, Maroussia Prignot & Valerio Alvarez decided to work together around a photographic project on the issue of asylum and the reception given to it in Belgium.
Anna Ádám: 'Pussy Love Book III'
Anna Ádám is a interdisciplinary artist from Hungary. Her practice combines different mediums beyond photography. Among her recent self-published books, 'Pussy Love Book III' is a hand-made, erotic artist book with limited edition.
