“I use photography to create a closer link with people and myself.” In this interview, meet András Ladocsi, nominated for Futures in 2020 by both Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center and Hyères Festival.

András Ladocsi’s desire for seeking and finding the truth comes from the subject he observes. His works reassure and delight the viewer while they are also equally capable of making them uncomfortable.

In his photos, naturalism and realism are greatly anesthetized and organized into tight compositions. The works vibrate between an intimate and a more distanced approach. The artist’s intent to systematize and to create is unavoidably present in the pictures, but his neutral use of space and backgrounds being completely free from identity, provide adequate territory for the observer’s personal interpretation.

Below, he talks about his inspirations and career:

Can you tell us a little bit about your inspirations? Which themes do you often work with?

The body, the skin, individuality, family, community, masculinity, age. I usually discuss things with my friends and use what just came up as a sparkle of inspiration.

How do you see your relationship with the medium? How do you use photography to express your art?

I use photography to create a closer link with people and myself. On top of that I simply love taking pictures.

Do you have any ongoing (or more recent) project that you would like to share with us?

I am at the beginning of a project about masculinity and body. When I'll be able to show anything from it, I would be happy to present it to you.

We have been facing a lot of challenges this year. How do you see this moment for art? Is it changing your practice?

It might not change my practice but definitely transformed my thinking on how I approach the medium.

What do you expect from this experience as a Futures talent?

I enjoyed the program a lot and hopefully it can push me further on my way.
