The FUTURES Annual Event 2024 brought nearly 100 artists and 20 curators to Zagreb from September 26th to 28th, hosted by the FUTURES member Organ Vida Festival.

Over three days, FUTURES artists participated in workshops, portfolio reviews, and experienced the 13th edition of the Organ Vida Festival, which featured exhibitions, performances, panel talks, and listening/DJ sessions.

Highlights included insightful workshops by Krzysztof Candrowicz, Myriam Boulos, Ana Zibelnik, Jakob Ganslmeier, Katarina Šoškić, and adO/Aptive. These sessions encouraged artists to reflect on their roles and practices, pushing the boundaries of the medium and addressing pressing contemporary issues. They also emphasized the profound power of collaboration and the transformative potential of collective creativity in facing shared challenges.

The portfolio review sessions were one of the key features of the event, providing emerging photographers and curators from across Europe the opportunity to exchange ideas and build connections. These moments created bridges and reinforced FUTURES as a key platform for artistic growth.

During the annual event, we launched the FUTURES traveling exhibition Ties That Bind, featuring artists: Ihar Hancharuk, Sasha Chaika, Angyvir Padilla, Jan Durina, Dev Dhunsi, Sheung Yiu, and Donja Nassei. Ties That Bind invites us "to challenge, untie, and move beyond familial ties. It explores new, meaningful ways to belong, connect, and experience closeness. It imagines new forms of attachment and kinship that could exist beyond familiar social structures, relationships, and species… or grow from within their loopholes (...) Ties That Bind dares us to challenge and raise questions, including those that are mischievous, fun, and dissident. It embraces projects that embody fragmented, contradictory, and open constructions of our individual and collective selves."

Ties That Bind exhibition will travel next year to Portugal for the Bienal Fotografia do Porto and to the Czech Republic for an exhibition at Fotograf Magazine.

FUTURES emphasizes the importance of building a community, especially in today’s landscape, that seeks to engage with diversity and collectively address the complexities of contemporary challenges. FUTURES, as an artist-driven platform, believes that "Artists’ role is more imperative now than ever before in a fast-changing world. Artists are not only creators but also keen observers and narrators of the human experience. Through their work, they dissect and capture the subtleties of change—geographical, social, aesthetic, or political—and share unique perspectives on the world." - Salvatore Vitale & Menno Liauw
