The Hungarian photographer Máté Bartha (b. 1987), one of the Futures Talents of 2019, was one of the winners of the Louis Roederer Discovery Award, during the recent 50th edition of Les Rencontres d'Arles. The prize was given for the project 'Kontakt' about military-themed summer camps in Hungary. The project was selected among 200 proposals received for this edition of the festival.
'Kontakt' visually explores summer camps organized by the NGO Home Defense School for children from 10 to 18 years old. In these programmes, like a military training, they are taught discipline, patriotism, how to survive in the wilderness and to handle airsoft weapons. Bartha spent over a year with the camp. In the series, the photographer questions our attitudes towards violence and war.
With 'Kontakt', Bartha was also awarded with the Capa Grand Prize Fellowship (2017) and the Robert Capa Grand Prize Hungary (2018).
Máté Bartha was selected by PhotoRomania for the Futures Talents 2019.
