Christian Lagata (b. 1986) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Madrid, selected for Futures by PHotoESPAÑA. He is interested in the image and imbrication of this medium with other disciplines, such as sculpture and installation - as well as visual media, music and the creation of scenography and environments.

“My work process is based on finding, combining and remixing poor materials, found objects and waste, signs that encourage me to experiment with new ways of interpreting what surrounds us.”

In this interview, Lagata talks about his inspirations and his career:

Can you explain us a little bit about your creative process? What inspires you?

Trying to convey an experience, an event or a state of mind is my main excuse when developing a project. I am interested in the image and its imbrication with other media, as well as sculpture, installation, music and the creation of scenography and environments. I investigate the relationship of the individual and the environment, about the spaces we inhabit and about contemporary forms of daily life and the reflection of the state of the objects that inhabit an age of wild mediatic reproduction. My work process is based on finding, combining and remixing poor materials, found objects and waste, signs that encourage me to experiment with new ways of interpreting what surrounds us.

How do you see your relationship with photography? Why did you choose this medium?

For me the photographic process is very important to experiment and connect with the idea and/or concept to be transmitted. It allows you to play with the memory and the imaginary of the viewer generating a tension and rhythms that can be adapted to the different objectives you have. In my case, I use photography in relation to other media such as sculpture or installation, sometimes producing collages with different materials.

Can you tell us a bit more projects that you have been working with?

More than projects I have been carrying out different works or series throughout my career in which I have used photography as another creation tool in juxtaposition with sculpture, installation or sound. Worrying mainly for the idea and concept to be transmitted and for the aesthetic as part of the piece itself. I am mostly interested in the everyday objects that surround us, obsolescence, publicity and the individual's relationship with the city, capitalism and contemporary forms of daily life.

How has been the experience of being a talent selected for Futures?

Being part of Futures has been a positive experience to continue knowing and learning about the photographic medium.

Can you share with us a little bit about your plans for the future after being part of the platform? Do you have any new projects in mind?

I keep documenting myself, researching and working in my workshop, trying to develop my ideas following the same line of work that I have been developing in recent years, testing new materials and new ways of using the image in relation to other media.
