FOMU
FOMU believes there is more to a photograph than meets the eye. Just like magic, it’s not necessarily about what you see, but about what you don’t see. About what is purposely framed, and what is left to the imagination. What is in focus, and what is lost in a blur. About what catches the light, and what fades into obscurity. Tilting our view and re-aligning our focus challenges us to allow for different perspectives, and to openly seek out our own blind spots. We strive for radical vulnerability, we listen when faced with criticism. FOMU aims to be a place where people feel welcome to broaden their horizon through photography. A place to slow down, to reflect, to engage and to share different perspectives. FOMU wants to be a brave space, a curious curator. Looking into the past helps us understand societal changes in the present: today's experiments are tomorrow’s heritage. FOMU offers perspectives on photography, while putting photography in perspective. FOMU houses one of the most significant photo collections in Europe, featuring both equipment and photo documents. Each year, FOMU presents several temporary exhibitions by nationally and internationally renowned photographers, showcasing photography as a medium that is part of a broader social and cultural context. Visitors can also attend lectures and workshops, visit the museum shop and the museumcafé. FOMU can be found in an old warehouse in the neighbourhood ‘t Zuid (South quarter of Antwerp), close to the museum of contemporary art M HKA and the Museum of Fine Arts.

.tiff is FOMU’s platform dedicated to emerging Belgian photography. Each year, 10 artists are invited to participate in a year-long journey with a poster magazine serving as the starting point. Since the magazine’s inception in 2012, its concept has remained consistent, however, the scope of the project has expanded significantly. .tiff has evolved into a platform shaped and influenced by the artists’ needs. FOMU leverages its extensive network, expertise and resources to stimulate the artistic practices and personal visions of the artists involved. The selection process is comprehensive, involving outreach to professionals in the Belgian photography and art scenes, as well as previous participants. This results in a longlist that encompasses a diverse range of backgrounds and artistic approaches.
For this edition, FOMU enlisted the expertise of three external jurors: Damarice Amao, photography historian and curatorial assistant in the photography department of Centre Pompidou, Paris; Pieter Vermeulen, art critic, lecturer, researcher and curator; and Tom Callemin, .tiff alumnus and artist. Together, we carefully curated a diverse group of artists, always considering whether the participants would benefit from our support at this particular juncture in their careers.
Over the years, .tiff has fostered a thriving Belgian photography community that transcends language barriers, facilitating the exchange of ideas between artists, curators and critics. .tiff offers a fresh perspective on the possibilities of photography and connects you with the creations of emerging image-makers.
At first glance, the concept for .tiff may appear simple: ten artists present their work in poster format. But, in fact, the concept transcends its individual parts to become a sort of capsule exhibition on paper. As a reader, you have the power to pull apart, unfold, flip over and rearrange the images, creating new interactions as you go.
Each year, FOMU selects a group of photographers from, or based in, Belgium, kickstarting a year-long mentorship programme. The programme includes the portfolio magazine .tiff, an exhibition, conversations with experts, talks and presentations. Its aim? To support photographers of all ages at an early stage in their career. FOMU uses its platform to give the participants national and international visibility, guides them through the photography world and offering space to experiment and reflect.
To make the selection, FOMU reaches out to its network of Belgian photography experts and previous participants. They are all asked to nominate three photographers, resulting in a list of photographers from diverse fields and backgrounds. FOMU draws a final selection from this longlist, striving for a group that reflects the broad spectrum of Belgian photography.
