Copenhagen Photo Festival is a non for profit organisation and the largest festival for photography in the Nordic countries. The festival has existed since 2010 and today it is also a year round platform that works to shine light on camera and lens based art via events, exhibitions, digital formats and cross collaborations. Through our activities we aim to create community around photography by inspiring, exchanging and advocating for the relevance of photography in an ever-evolving world. Each year in June our endeavours all come together for the festival celebration of photography with exhibitions, networking activities, talks, parties and events at our festival centre as well as with our many festival partners across the region. Copenhagen Photo Festival curates and hosts a number of exhibitions at the festival centre. The festival has an unorthodox and experimental approach to exhibition making and strives to engage with its surroundings over the short festival period – and always with an ambition to uphold a sustainable exhibition practice. Since 2016 the headliners of the festival centre have been selected through an open call and our programme committee selects between 3 to 6 solo artists each year. Several hundred apply to our open call to exhibit during the festival each year. Parallel to the festival’s own activities, the festival presents a partner programme around the city and collaborates with both emerging and established venues that participate with exhibitions, events, talks and more. In recent years the festival has engaged in creating more networking opportunities, support and activities for emerging and established artists and curators from the Nordic countries and abroad with engagement in the FUTURES Photography Platform as well as organising seminars, workshops, photo print and photo book markets. This all aligns with Copenhagen Photo Festival's strategic pursuit over the next years, which aims to create space for dialogue and connections between photography, people and the surrounding environment and society.

For this year's FUTURES, Copenhagen Photo Festival offered its annual open talent call exclusively for lens-based artists and photographers in the Nordic region who were born in or after 1984. They also had to have been educated within the field of photography and art, or have a CV which presented continual professional experience in the field within the last 3 years. The festival’s committee – comprising: Patricia Breinholm Bertram, Curator and Head of Communications at Martin Asbæk Gallery; Stinus Duch, publisher and founder of Disko Bay Books; Søren Pagter, Head of Photojournalism at Danish School of Media and Journalism/DMJX,; and Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen, Managing Director of Copenhagen Photo Festival – prioritized a well-balanced selection, spanning a wide variety of lens-based practice from documentary or anthropological approaches to conceptual and performance-based art.

2023

Copenhagen Photo Festival wishes to shed light on emerging lens-based artists and photographers from the Nordics. In 2023 the focus is on talents from Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden). Based on an open call in that region of the Nordics, the festival’s programme committee has appointed five talents who represent the scope of contemporary young fine art and documentary photography including video performance within the defined geographical area. We aim for talents at a state in their career where FUTURES’ international connections, professional feedback and the networking can boost or push the boundaries of the talents’ individual position.

In the selection process the programme committee strives for inclusiveness, educational variation, thematic and genre-wise diversity, originality, and relevance. Besides those aspects, the group of talents must also represent a playful approach to lens-based technology and/or a curiosity towards considering photography within the frames of spatial realms.

2021

Copenhagen Photo Festival has joined Futures in the platform’s fourth year and wishes to shed light on emerging Nordic lens-based art. This regional focus made it possible to receive additional Nordic funds (especially from Nordic Culture Point) and create a programme for upcoming and recent graduates in art or documentary photography residing in the Nordics.

In our call, we searched for talents who fit the festival’s vision of engaging photography with architecture or underline our focus on the medium of photography itself. More specifically: 1) challenge the perception of, or work innovatively with spatial realms, light and architecture or embrace aspects of sustainability and a dialogue with nature and built world or 2) experiment with transformative, or future-focused methods, techniques, and aesthetics in lens-based technology.
