Truth and lies, the relationship with oneself, interpersonal bonds, and the surrounding environment form the fundamental mix of themes explored by the selected artists. All of this creates a web of approaches that can be as diverse as the colors of individual moods, as intense as a sunlit moment spent with loved ones, as mysterious as a myth, or as fascinating as the bark of a tree viewed from a new perspective.
Photography is about the search. Some seek through the medium to discover where they belong, while others explore new places waiting to be uncovered. Some aim to find their own narrative, while others push the boundaries of the photographic medium, ultimately leading everyone on a quest for truth. Yet, in a world where absolute truth is elusive, the only recourse is to embrace one's attempt at a fresh perspective and a revision of established ideas, and this is the point of view for discovering new talents, relishing the diverse ways individuals seek for new ways of reporting on their chosen subjects.
This talent selection for FUTURES 2023 is based on the artists' previous collaborations with Fotograf Magazine. What is characteristic of Fotograf is the interest in themes reporting on the state of the contemporary world, and this is also reflected in this year's mix of new talents.
Fotograf Magazine is comprehensive 80-page periodical, published in both Czech and English editions since 2002. Building on the magazine’s activities, Fotograf Gallery was opened in 2009. Two years later, the first Fotograf Festival was held. This led to the establishment of Fotograf Magazine z.s. as a registered association, overseeing our initiatives in the field of photography and other overlapping disciplines - from publications and exhibitions to educational activities.
Through these activities, the organisation aims to promote and support photography within the context of fine arts, to encourage its inclusion in the field of contemporary art, and to increase public awareness about photography in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Over the course of its existence, Fotograf Magazine has taken on a prominent position amongst Czech cultural periodicals. At the global level, it has become one of the most important magazines focusing on contemporary photographic art. Fotograf Magazine is published three times a year and each issue has a unique thematic focus, allowing individual issues to become important references for the study of specific subjects.
