The Triennial of Photography Hamburg is an internationally renowned photo festival that takes place every three years in collaboration with major museums, exhibition spaces, and cultural institutions. Initiated in 1999 by collector and photographer F.C. Gundlach, the photo festival has evolved over the years to become one of the most significant photography events in Germany, enjoying international acclaim. Under a common theme, conceptualized by varying artistic leadership, numerous photo exhibitions shed light on highly relevant photographic themes and trends. The Triennial of Photography is accompanied by an international, interdisciplinary symposium that includes artist talks, specialized discussions, lectures, portfolio reviews, and an international conference in the lead-up to and during the festival period.

The five selected talents for this year’s FUTURES dedicate their projects to the significant questions of our time. To convey their complex themes, they not only utilise the expressive possibilities of photography but also expand them through multidisciplinary practices also drawing from film, sound, AI, 3D scanning and expansive installations.
The Triennial of Photography is a unique collaborative project with Hamburg’s major museums, exhibition houses, cultural institutions, galleries and other organisers, all of whom share a passion and expertise for photography. For FUTURES this year, we asked photography experts from our large network to nominate dedicated and emerging artists who have caught their eyes. The five selected artists move between the two poles of classical documentary photography and staged photography, and their themes are more topical than ever: sustainability and the environment, migration, integration and identity, beauty and ideals.
The Triennial of Photography Hamburg has taken place every three years since 1999, in collaboration with Hamburg’s major museums, exhibition houses, cultural institutions, galleries and other organisers. A large number of photo exhibitions under a common theme highlight current tendencies. Since 2014, the Triennial’s organisation has been led by the Deichtorhallen Hamburg GmbH.
The 8th edition of the Triennial of Photography Hamburg 2022 is guided by the notion of ‘Currency’. In this endeavour, artistic director Koyo Kouoh leads a curatorial
team that includes Rasha Salti, Gabriella Beckhurst Feijoo, and Oluremi C. Onabanjo, with the coordinative assistance of Cale Garrido. Opening in May 2022, the Triennial
is conceived as a parcours of twelve exhibitions at major museums, institutions, and spaces across Hamburg, including a festival in June 2022 and numerous events.
The artists we have selected for FUTURES each take on topics with high social relevance, creating projects that express the characteristics of their photography.

The 8th edition of the Triennial of Photography Hamburg will open on 19 May 2022. Based on the theme of Currency, artistic director Koyo Kouoh and her team of international curators, that includes Rasha Salti, Gabriella Beckhurst Feijoo, Oluremi C. Onabanjo and Cale Garrido, will explore how our “retinal era” leads us to perceive the world through image capture. Currency not only refers to money and its significance as an economic indicator, it is borrowed in this context to instigate a critical examination of photography. The 8th Triennial is accompanied by an international, interdisciplinary symposium in the run-up to the event and a festival lasting several days in the summer of 2022.
