Table For One
Fred Mungo
Table for One is a visual exploration of the practice of eating alone, and how it relates to issues of home-making, adaptation, and isolation. The images are produced through a research process that involved both academic investigation and a series of interviews with 20-35 year-olds in Europe. Where Table For One started as a study of eating habits among London-based expat students, it took a new turn during pandemic lockdowns, when many of us found ourselves transforming our living – and eating – routines. “Photographs of food – much like food itself – can invoke deep-seated questions and anxieties about issues such as consumption, aspiration, tradition, gender, race, desire, wealth, poverty, pleasure, revulsion and domesticity” (S. Bright, 2017). With this idea as a starting point, my body of work examines the relationship between food, society, and individualism. The resulting photographs strive to be a stimulus for viewers to reflect on how their eating practices mirror their own living status, dreams, and aspirations.
